Websites with Video
HTML5 and CSS3 has undoubtedly given web designers more freedom in creating websites with video effects. The result has been some beautiful and engaging websites. I believe many of the sites in this article below give a hint to the future of web design which will be far from a static experience as it so often is today.
The sites in this showcase show that web designers are now more comfortable using moving video in a more creative way without suffering all the cross browser issues with embedding video and problems with flash. HTML5 does not solve all these issues, and Internet Explorer still wants to make life difficult for web designers, but we are now entering a period where the visual experience of a web design will determined more by the creativity of the designer and not the limitations of the technology.
The websites below all have large full screen videos embedded in the background of their home pages above the fold so the visitor sees a moving image straight away. Some have used this effect to promote their product or service whilst others have done so to create a certain mood and atmosphere in a similar fashion to that of a TV ad director or music video producer.
The common feature of these effects is that they all auto play when the site is loaded and fill the background – this creates an interesting effect for a few seconds on some whilst others are successful in holding the viewers attention for much longer. However, I believe the auto playing of sound is quite annoying on the ones that use it and the default should be to have any accompanying sound off and give the user the choice to turn it on.
Anyway, here are a range of examples of some creative, fun, beautiful and interesting examples of websites that use full screen video backgrounds that autoplay on landing. I hope you find some inspiration for your next web project.
